Trip to Haast beach

Gates of Haast
The trip started in the rain and the rivers were stunning the Gates of Haast is a bridge over the river Haast and was very full. The Haast mountain pass is the lowest route over the Southern Alps.
Jackson Bay looking so sunny

A proper rainforest has rain

A short walk from Jackson Bay is a world away

Pioneer cemetery
The Pioneer cemetery is an overgrown area in a forest where the original European settlers were buried. The forest has been growing around it and in less than 100 years the graves are becoming part of the forest. A very spooky place and also very beautiful. Nature will always win in the end.

Estuary looks so much nicer with sunshine

There was a lot of water and the viewing platform was under water
Most people come to Haast during the spring for one reason and that is whitebaiting! Whitbait are tiny fish that come in from the sea in their first year after hatching at sea. People are truly obsessive about this tiny fish and build giant platforms stretching out up to 100m some can be lifted in bad weather. The platforms are allowed to have one net on them to catch whitebait on the incoming tide.
